In vitro fertilisation

In vitro fertilization

For many couples facing fertility problems, in vitro fertilization (IVF) is the best option for achieving a pregnancy. IVF is an indication for a variety of infertility factors such as mild male infertility, endometriosis, tubal factor and unexplained infertility.

In vitro fertilization – The procedure

During conventional IVF oocytes are fertilized by spermatozoa in the laboratory (instead of the fallopian tubes). Spermatozoa are mixed together with oocytes in a dish and allow to fertilize naturally.

Normal sperm parameters are a prerequisite for IVF.

In cases where the sperm count or movement are less than normal, then a process called Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is used to achieve fertilization.
